Bucket List!

My favorite quarterback, John Elway, just turned 50, He is 6 months older than me, two time Super-bowl champion, hall of famer…holds numerous records…most fourth quarter comebacks etc! In a recent article in the Denver Post…He was talking about his own mortality.

With luck and hard work, I've achieved a lot in my life so far, but I've still got a lot more I want to do," Elway told The Denver Post in a lengthy conversation at Elway's restaurant in Cherry Creek.

Elway's bucket list includes playing the bad guy in a cowboy movie, driving a stock car on a local track, biking the Ride The Rockies, traveling to Italy again (where he proposed to his wife of 10 months, Paige), playing in a seniors golf tournament, visiting the historic World War II beach site at Normandy, watching his four children graduate from college (the oldest has earned a master's degree, and the other three are attending different universities), doing dozens of new business deals, growing the restaurants he co-owns.

This week I was thinking about another bucket list...not from a hall of fame quarterback, but from the heart of a man who loved Jesus, a love that would cost his earthly life.

In the book of 2 Peter we read the Apostle Peter’s bucket list!
I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.
(2 Peter 1:3-5)
Whenever I think of the Apostle Peter, I always picture him robust, strong, and commanding. He came to know Jesus because his brother Andrew told him about the Lord. Peter’s devotion to Jesus at times was rocky (Just like us) but deep down and clearly after the resurrection, He became the Rock (Strong follower of Jesus) that our Lord knew he would be.

By the time Peter writes his second letter, his time on the planet is drawing to a close. Some translations use the vivid metaphor of a tent, that is describing Peters physical life, that is about to be taken down. The ESV states that he is about to “Put off his body” he is heading to a believers real home heaven.

As someone once said “We are not physical creatures having a spiritual experience, but spiritual creatures having a physical experience”.

Before Peter’s departure his bucket list (Things you want to do before you die) does not include, extensive travel, or eye opening adventure no...He wants believers then and now to remember what matters most.

And what matters most is knowing the Lord and growing in knowledge of Him!

Observe Peter’s bucket list:

For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. (2 Peter 2:5-9).

? What is your bucket list?
